Guarded compound?

I am in chapter 3 and am at the point where i have done my stronghold quest ( cleric), finished mae-var quest, skinner murders, trademeet, got nalia back, i did'nt get imoen back yet tho- i have been crossing these vampires in the town at night.. but i stumbled upon this "Guarded compound" in the temple district- i have nothing yet as a quest for this yet- what is this for?
First these 2 mages greet you then they "gate" out and these 5 monsters are summoned-- if you stay near the door the monsters will kill each other with only one living.. then you go upstairs and all these tough mages attack you.. what IS this .. i did not kill those vampires for that shadow knight thing yet.. does this have anything to do with Imoen or Irenicus?
And - once i finish Aran Linvail's quest- am i prevented from going into parts of athkatla ? I am trying to finish all my smaller quests before i finish with the shadow thieves quests.

There is no significance to the main plot in the Guarded Compound (except for some valuable loots) on the Slave Lords, just go upstairs to 2nd floor, kill and loot.
As for completing all Aran Linvail's quests, once you finished the last quest for Aran, you can either head straight to Chp4 or stay in town to finish unfinished side quests first (then visit Aran again and go to Chp 4).

Yep wait until you have finished all the side quests and THEN see Aran Linvail.
Once you visit him its on to chapter 4 and lots more fun. Either that or see Aran and finish the side quests later. Id see Aran lastly because the experience you get from the side quests is helpful before advancing to chapter 4.

Gaurded compound,as my learned friend Accord said, has nothing to do with the plot besides XP and loot. good stuff though

There WERE rumours of a lost sub-plot, buried in SOA. The Guarded Compund is said to be part of this borken quest, where the encounters still exist, but the clues that link them are gone. I think you can get a fix to reinstate the quest - though it doiesn't work for saved games - from Baldurdash.

OR, if you know how to edit/make your own module, you could manipulate lots things and incorporate those guys into you own complete expansion for BG2!!
