Enlightened self interest means "I'll get plenty of what I want if I give everybody what they want". Happy customers mean good long term revenue, although it is more expensive and difficult to achieve - but truly smart, and ethical, businessmen recognize how much better it is to do business this way.

Businessmen that are simply greedy don't care about their customer base, and do things like milking the business until it dies at the expense of the employees and their customers.
