Another piece of advice B4 I start?

thanks for the replies about Jaheira. When I start BGII, will I even have the option of keeping the other characters or will J. be the only one around? Also, is there a way my avatar can keep any of the items the other characters have and transfer them to BGII?

No, jaheira will not be the only one there, Minsc is in the next cage. You'll meet another NPC on the next level.
In order to keep the items, you have to kinda cheat. Ok, you have to abuse the script. As soon as the game starts BEFORE YOU HEAR YOUR CHARACTER SCREAM, hit space, then I to get to inventory. DROP all items you want to keep on the ground. exit inventory and hit space to unpause the game. then when you get control over your character simply pick up your staff from the gorund.
