I'm wondering, can a drow or deep gnome get blinded by his own spells? If a drow cast, say, Fire Storm and get caught in the storm, does he run the risk of becoming blind? If so, is there a way to prevent this, other than to stay outside the AoE? Sunglasses, perhaps?

I don't think so. I've never had it happen.

No, it can happen. If you wanna check it out, try making a Drow Cleric and casting a Sunbeam on yourself.

Strange, I started a drow Morninglord of Lathander and casted the domain spell Sunscorch on myself, and got blinded. Maybe your drow Cleric succeeded on a fort. save roll.

Although I'm not gonna cast offensive spells on myself when I play, what I'm really wondering about is AoE spells like Fire Storm. They might blind you if you get caught in the Aoe.

One final thing, I typed wrong in my original post; it should say gray dwarves instead of deep gnomes. Apparently, deep gnomes can't be blinded by fire spells the same way as gray dwarves and drow.

I've just checked out Sunbeam, and creatures (the caster too?) have to make a reflex save aginst the blinding effect to avoid it.

Firestorm, Fireball, Delayed Blast Fireball and the like can not blind anyone.
One more thing..

That's what I said, it blinds him. Sunscorch blinds, Sunbeam blinds, as well as a few others(Sol..). Blind Fight, when I DM a P&P game I usually have the Blind Fight feat negate all penalties from daylight blindness but the view range, but unfortunately it is not so in the game.. Blind Fight takes effect only when your opponent is hidden or invisible.

I am 90% Drow and Duergar have racial weakness to light, and are blinded and take extra damage from fire spells, similar to undead.

I believe Fire Storm does blind drow and duergar if they fail a save, but the rest don't.

Sorry, I misread your post. Shows how easy a "can" can become a "can't".

Heh
Drow have a -1 penalty, Druegar have -2 when exposed to bright light. They take no extra damage from fire, light blasts or anything. If exposed to sudden flashes they get blinded for a short time.
