I just don't quite understand how Proficiency Slots work. My character (Mage/Thief in this case) levels up and I get 1 point. I want to add a point to BOWS but I can't for some reason. I can add it to most other skills that don't have points in them already. I'm thinking it's because I need more points but I'm not sure. So do I have to wait for my character to level again?
Is there a quick way to have it so when my Mage/Thief wants to cast a spell he will take off his armor and the re-equip it when the spell cast is done. Same question about switching to a ranged weapon. It's a pain to switch all the stuff by hand. I'm Hoping for a hot key like NWN or something. Thanks |

Only warrior classes can have more that 1 proficiency point in a given weapon.

Pure or dual class fighters get up to 5 *s, other warriors or warrior multiclasses get up to 2 *s, and everyone else gets 1 *.
No way around the switching thing. I would A. give him mage robes and don't use him for backstabbing B. Keep a bow (or whatever ranged weapon) equipped at all times, since this guy shouldn't be front line. Have a dagger in your inventory just in cast. If you get a special ability dagger that you want to keep, then only use that. One more thing: Welcome to IW! |

Thanks for the reply. After I posted I did find the info about the 1 slot thing in the FRONT of the manual. I was looking in the back under the AD&D stuff. Too bad about the hotkeys.
Thanks again - and Happy New Year |

DarkStar,
You can put weapons in your weapons quickslots. If you want to lower your armor class, the first level mage spell "Armor" is a good choice. It gives you the same AC as if you had a scale mail equipped, without preventing spellcasting or affecting your thieving skills. It also lasts for eight or nine hours (don't remember which). There are similar spells that are even better, but they don't last as long so only use them prior to combat. Later in the game you might also find a chainmail which allows you to cast spells while wearing it...

Darkstar,
As Marty4 suggested, Multi-Classing (MC) or Dual Classing (DC) your Thief will allow him to advance to at least 2 PP per weapon. A well thought out build can get you to 5 PP in a weapon for a DC Fighter/Thief. And, as Azred said, Dundee Slaytern probably has a script that will do all you asked, and 17 other things that you never even thought of. Hope this helps. -------------------- What's a party, without a song? Bards ROCK! Party On!! [ 01-07-2005, 03:38 PM: Message edited by: NobleNick ] |

Try using the combination Shield+blur+armor, if you have a dex of 18 (which you probaly do since your a theif) it should get your AC to -4 or -5.
