Hello everyone
This discusses plot points, so it probably counts as a spoiler

I've reached Rapax Rift, and caused the cave-in, but I can't cross to the other passage; there's a brick in the lava pool which I can't walk around. I looked at a walkthrough to find out what I'm supposed to do next, and I'm sure I'm supposed to cross to the next passage. Does anyone know what's wrong?

I also tried to reach the graveyard dungeon, but I can't get the last rune to light up. Do they all need to be done at once? And how do I reach the other two dungeons which apparently exist?

Lastly, what is the point of Priests? Divine magic is the weakest as far as I can tell, and Bishops with heal spells seem far more useful.

First of all, welcome to IW!

I don't recall it exactly but I think you should be able to cross the lava after the cave-in (have you tried it several times)?

Regarding retro-dungeons take a look at this site:
http://www.flamestryke.com/wizardry8...trykes_w8.html

SoulShield is one of the most useful spells in the mid- to lategame. Priests also can pray for miracles which can be useful.

Edit: Besides that, the Priest is a "pure" class, meaning he needs less experience to level up.

regarding the cave-in, i've never had any trouble following the path through the wall. try getting a running start - perhaps you are getting stuck on a raised bit (sometimes the 3D nature of wiz 8 can get a bit narky in this respect).

ghoul's tip on the dungeons is your best course. suffice to say you do have to have all the runes activated at once before you can take the next step towards entering them.

finally, the priest in wiz 8 is akin to the classic PNP character. they are a great utility character to have along. they key for them is buffing and healing - it's virtually a full time job keeping a party alive! and although their offensive magic is generally either weak or cant be cast frequently due to low mana, there are a number of people who claim the priest is the most valuable class to have.

atlus 7 did some great work outling two ways to develop a battle priest that focusses on fighting stats/abilities (eg mace and shield or 2H staff) and lets magic develop come naturally from spell casting.

the other options is to run up powercast with the intention of maximising the effectiveness of those late attacking spells the priest gets (eg lightning, falling stars, death wish). they're costly spells, but with a priest with high power cast throwing a death wish (divine) along side an alchemist with high power cast throwing quicksand (earth) and a mage with high power cast throwing asphyxiation (air)... whew. that'll put some hurtin on any bunch. however, that comes at the expense of the priest's fighting development.

if i had to pick a weak spell book, i'd say psionic. through level 4/5 is great, but the level 6/7 spells are costly and minimally effective. i'd take a monk over a psionicist every time.

What you may be missing in the Rift there is that you also have to knock a broken beam aside (accross the hall from the hole) to make more cave in so you can get through the lava.

The priest is a very good class, regardless of what people think. Unlike you're standard magic casting class, where fighting abilities are poor, the priest (true for D&D too) makes a good fighter. If you play D&D, think of the priest not as a cleric, but more of a paladin. You'll find that once you have all protection spells cast in battle, combat awaits you're priest. His prayer ability is also extremely useful. So don't instantly blow off the priest, the class is extremely effective.

scatter's right on here, there is a beam opposite the lava that needs to be "touched". (can't tell you HOW MANY times, first run through, that I circled around and around the rapax area without getting where I wanted to go..)

Thanks folks, that helped.
About a priest being good at combat, though: doesn't he get to use the same items as a bishop?
Also someone mentioned that bards don't benefit from powercast, but why then does my bard's powercast skill increase every so often after playing music? Surely a skill must be practised for it to increase?
While I'm asking about characters, what is the ranger's strength? There's a whole thread here in which people are discussing how close combat is more effective than ranged attacks, yet the ranger is a dedicated archer. Given the greater potential for dealing high amounts of damage in close combat, I'd think that it'd be better to have a fighter-type character who can also use a bow. In particular, a bard can use most items a ranger can, and can also use all those powerful instruments. In the manual in the summaries of each character type it gives a short, unbiased description of the character and for the bard it actually says something like 'this is a very powerful character'.

Priest get to use much the same items as bishops, but bishop do not become good fighters, because they need their skill points in the magic scools much more, and also do not have time to combat since they have such a large number of spells to cast.

Bards can be developed into strong melee fighters. You can focus on their fighting skills and let music skill go up without putting many or even any points into it. They are not quite as good as a Rogue but better than a Ranger, IMO. There are long discussions on Bard development available.

it's an interesting point about powercast going up when they play. i've never heard anyone report that. but i do remember someone (eew?) testing a bard where they pumped powercast to the extreme and found them no more effective than a bard without powercast.
