Am I the only one who uses a Gnome/Illusionist? Gnomes get that extra intelligence helping to guarantee that there's no limit to the number of spells that can be learned for each level and increases the odds of learning them in the first place. Specialising gets one extra spell per level. That's worth a lot.
I've seen good arguments for dual class fighter/mage, but again that means you can't specialise in a school. I can't see giving up that extra spell just for some fighting abilities which mages aren't so good at anyway. |

It just depends on your play style. I beat SoA and ToB with my main character as a pure mage and had a blast. Kensai/Mage may be a technically stronger class, but I find that when I play it I end up hacking and slashing more than spell casting, which is what I enjoy. So it basically boild down to personal preference.

I tried to play as a mage but found it hard in the early stages of the game, with only minsc and jaheria to do the fighting. It also maent that i had 2 sleep alot to recover my spells. But when you get to high levels this isn't as much of a problem, but finding good fighter protection is, the only pure fighter in the game is Mazzy and is better with her bow than with melle weapons.
thank you for listening to my humble opinion, Aragorn Son of Arathron |

Oh man, i'd get crucified if this was another board! I dislike mages, I have mages in my parties, usually only Edwin and Imoen (though partial reason cos they cool characters) but it is NEVER and never will be my main character, just doesn't suit me But of course you are free to experiment with whatever class you want as playing BG2 is never a waste of time no matter what you play as.

The downside of being an illusionsist is u cant cast necromancy, no big deal at lower levels but 'Death' and 'Finger of Death' can make short work of some real tought enemys, athlough illusions may help u avoid them altogether i suppose.
Specialist mages seem to get more spells per level than the other wizards, and are more flexable the sorcerers, the only downside is chosing which sphere of magic u DONT need.... ------------------ Those who ph33r the darkness have never seen what the light can do |

I did BG1 with my main char as a mage - it makes it difficult and MUCH more strategic. Since I played mage in BG1 and used to always play mage in the tabletop version, I decided to go monk in BG2. Now level 20 and durn near impossible to kill when magic items are combined with natural class abilities. With a girdle of fire giant str or whatnot the monk can easily average 100dmg per round (almost always hits).
At any rate - the answer to your question is YES, it is worth it, but pick your party carefully as always, and be prepared to run out of spells and having to rest. A lot. Get it so your mage has 18 Int, 18 Dex and 16 Con. Another option is play fighter to level 5 or so and then dual class so you start off with more hitpoints etc. |

Hmmm...I prefer the invoker to the illusionist. But then again, the Gnomish intelligence bonus was not an issue since I imported my BG1 character who had read the tome that gave him int +1

Sorcerer rule the roost for me, they are very versatile and a lot of fun. As a roleplaying idea necromancers and Invokers are cool but in bg2 conjuerers are the most practical.

I have beat that game with several different parties... and to me the solo mage was the most fun to play. There were some REALLY slow battles but in the end it was alot more fun. With the staff of Magi I was nearly invulnerable... That is my opinion, for all the good that it did.
