Andrew, the communications are happeneng over a phone line. The line they are using is for a number that the sniper specified, which the police rerouted to their command post, so all he has to do is call that number. He has asked for a toll free 800 number though, so Im guessing he is tired of the long distance calls.

People are calling for all kninds of new laws, not all of them gun laws. Wat I wanted to know was how many people actually thought another piece of paper would stop these kinds of crimes.

I don't think any law we could come up with would stop a guy like him.

I am not a gun fan, myself - but I don't think outlawing what he probably got illegally would help.

exactly the point. guns are illegal in china, so what? gangsters still shoot people with shot gun, and explosives still go off in bus. and don't tell me chinese laws are inferior

I answered no to all four questions.

No way, no how, not even if MY life were at stake would I want anyone to cooperate with such a lunatic. Also, I am not, nor will I ever live in fear as I could drop dead at any minute for a myriad of reasons anyway. If it's my time to go, then whether it's a heart attack, getting hit by a bus, or getting picked off by a lunatic with a sniper rifle, it's my time to go and I'm not afraid to die.

And no laws in existence are influencing this guys decision to kill people, so no new ones will make any difference either.

One question I would like to pose is who thinks this guy is one of the Al Qaeda network and who thinks he's a home-grown mental case? Is he someone trying to prove to us that we - as infidels - are not safe anywhere anymore or is he some "pathetic soul pushed over the edge" by what he THINKS are injustices in the world and believes that he is in the right?

Personally, I'm leaning more towards the cat-and-mouse game by an Al Qaeda member simply because - so far as has been reported, he doesn't follow the usual patterns of a sociopath/psychopath. There are too many things, at this point, that just don't fit together with someone (or even a couple of someones) with a 'domestic issue'. This seems, too much, to be someone trying to make us afraid and make us all look like bumbling idiots.

Just my 2c.

As Pierre Trudeau said:

"We will not negotiate with terrorists"

Period.

Unfourtunatly, we don't learn from our mistakes. I highly doubt any bans of guns will be made, not 1 bit.

Exactly, tighter gun controls.

A shooting in England is extremely rare, we here about yours (USA) 10x more than ours. Probably more.
