In Denmark the National Bureau of Statistics has delievered it's annual survey of the most popular names for newbornes.

13 male children (of muslim parents) have been named Osama since 9-11.

As opposed to Germany where it is illigal to use the name Osama. (A trial is currently underway to determine the legality of the ban.)

So - what do you think of this way of showing your sympathies - and is it fundamentaly different to naming your child after another (in)famous person?

P.S. the most popular names are Mads and Sofie

I think it's fine for them to do this - quite helpful to let us all know what side they're on.

*asks Horatio's cousin Suddam*
Really? You mean Horatio's real name is Liza Minelli?
Famous names must run in the family.

I don't think they should pay much attention to this. Osama is quite a common name in the Arab world. I'm sure that even if September 11 never took place, we would still see a lot of newborn Osama's, only then we wouldn't be paying attention to it. Believe it or not, there are still people who name their son Adolf.

Hmm... maybe I should be wary of that Joseph person I know- he must have been named after Stalin.

well seeing as a child is born and named every 10 seconds I doubt a mere 13 osamas will offer any alterations of such a scale as to make and change laws

If you mean Mats, it's a Swedish name (Mats Sundin).
