Well I remember professor mentioning Petofi at history class in connection with 1848 revolution.

I actually read two of Gardonyi's books (slovene translations ofcourse), the book you mentioned and another about young boy (I think his name was Jancsi) becoming a involuntary monk. The story takes place in 16th century about 30 years after the battle at Mohacs (sp?) where Hungarians were defeated by Turks.
