Everytime I send a message using AIM and MSN 6.1(with patches!) it freezes for a few seconds. This is getting very irritating, especially now since it will randomly freeze my AOL program for a few seconds on top of IMs, not good when I'm playing WC3

I tried running Norton AntiVirus only to discover it has script problems and won't let me uninstall to reinstall without some file called NAVShext.dll

I ran AOL's comp checkup which pointed out 3 problems that I fixed, but none of which fix THIS problem. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of virus. Is there some online program I can use that will do a scan for virus's? Or if any of you had this problem before, is there another way to fix it?

Thanks!

There is you problem, right there! AOL is very very bad, if you can get some better servace (and lets face it that is almost every other one), do.

since you probably wont do that, get Adaware and Spybot S&D and run them i suspect your clogged up with Spyware (not technically a virus i dont think).

if that still doesnt work, make sure youve defragmented + scandisked + have some free space for your page file on your OS hard disk

Thanks Zero, I'll check those out

I figured someone would bash on AOL, but the truth is theyve given good service to us for the last 8 or 9 years. *shrug*

That is what happens to those that do not pull for the Panthers.

The fact that Norton AV is having problems points to a virus being present and interfering with it. Try running trend housecall:

since braudband is still relatively new, does that mean you have never used any other ISP? you may think AOL is good if you have no comparason, but belive me i had to use it for a long enough time (couple years ish) and it is definatly the bottom rung on the ladder of speed + bloatware (aka worst for these things). plus it is impossible to get rid of. you may not have encountered this yet, but removal requires either a few weeks of work, or a clean format

Thanks andrew. The Spy and Ad programs found hella lot of stuff, but still didnt fix it

Zero, yes I have tried other ISPs, such as Compuserve and Earthlink, and they're no better. I live in a rural area of San Diego, so broadband is quite new here, and quite expensive. We're moving in a year or so anyway so it doesn't matter

If you still have problems try Trillian. I use it to connect to MSN, ICQ, AOL and IRC all at once. Kinda saves me from having to run all those programs individually.
