You must like doing head gaskets on your cars...dodge is #1 for bad headgaskets, Ford is #2 (never, NEVER buy a Dodge Neon, or a Ford 3.8...)

The one thing I could never understand was the way people let themselves get raped on the used car lots.

I can buy a brand new Honda, with a warranty, for $500 more than it takes to buy a 3 year-old Honda with 150k and no warranty.

That's great! I'll be getting one soon, I don't know exactly when. I just hope it's sometime soon because those 90-sum days are coming up pretty fast *points below*

Alfa Romeo, isn't that the actor who played the Joker in the old Batman TV show? Actually I can't understand the reliance upon automobiles by so many IW'ers.

I'll let you in on a secret. Here in Texas we really rely on 2 modes of travel. The things you see on TV and in film is just propaganda. We actually use horses (individual or stagecoach) or nuclear power magnetic repulsion trains as mass transit.

Well I think that if a person gets a lemon, it doesn't mean all cars made from that manufacturer are all lemons. Its the same if you go into a restaurant chain, and get a bad meal, you go again and have a totally different dining experience, or go to a different one in a different town, and the food is good; it isn't the restaurant chain, per se, but the individuals working behind each of them. Same for cars, if somebody Effed up a particular vehicle while building it, or messed up the idea of it altogether, doesn't mean that every car made by that manufacturer is the same.

I myself loved Oldsmobiles, but they are out of business now. Cars lasted a good long time with not any excessive maintenance, even over 100,000 miles.

I own a Chevy atm, my family all owns Chevies btw, and they are very reliable cars, American cars My car atm has 112,000 miles on it, runs just fine

I had a Pinto too that went over 100,000 miles believe it or not. Was a 1980 model, the last year they made Pintos LOL. My parents bought it for me btw, not MY choice But the dang thing never let me down, and I was a teenager when I had it, and dogged and abused it as well. Was a good car, even had power steering, rear defrost, and AC. *snif*

In other words, basically, don't generalize, every car is different LOL, no matter the manufacturer or where it came from.

I mean I bet somewhere there was a person who had a damn fine runnin Edsall... ROTFL! OK maybe not, but that was a total exception!

Bought my wife a Subaru Outback wagon last year and liked it so much that I bought a Legacy GT Limited for myself for winter months when the Z28 is off the road (500 hp and ice are not a good mix)... Soobs are great cars for northern climates. the only other Japanese brands I'd consider would be Nissan (the Maxima is a very nice family sedan with a good dose of giddy-up) or Mitsu's (Lancer Evo... Yummy).

In US cars there's only the Z06... you can keep the rest (since they retired my beloved F-body's)

In Europe there's the TT, Mini Cooper, that new souped up VW, and lots more than I couldn't afford (M5 is probably the only luxo-sports sedan I'd ever consider).

So many cars... so little money.

Most important thing, IMHO, if you go for a new car is to get it from a good dealer. I had a 1989 Dodge Shadow that I refer to as my Christmas car -- over its life, the dealer replaced (sing with me now...)

Three power modules
Two alternators
And a battery under the hood

I kid you not. One time, I picked it up, drove half a mile, and turned right back around.

Then I moved and started the song over with a new dealer. The service guy looked at all my invoices and told me he'd have to go through the same series of events. But he also promised he'd only stop at each one once. He also pointed me to the right place in Chrysler to get them to pay, since the car was now just out of warranty.

Fourth trip they replaced the wiring harness. Problem disappeared.

Prior to that second dealer, I never would have bought a Dodge again. Thanks to him, I have since bought two, and I've got my "good" dealer out here.

And for reference, the JD Power car ranking system, whereby they rate a model with a number... the best numbers out there are around 50. The worst are around 200. What's the number mean? Number of problems per 100 vehicles. So with the best cars out there, you've got a 50/50 chance of having a problem of some kind. It's the dealer who handles it that can make the big difference.

No probs since then, and Toyota fixed it for free and begrudgingly paid my $500 tow bill (towed it back to Syracuse, NOT the nearest station). Nothing but smooth sailing since then -- and some alternators just come off the line bad.

After owning a Z24 as my first car, I vowed never to buy USA again. My main problem is that I want a car designed to run 200K miles before major problems rather than one designed to run 90K miles. So, unless it's a Corvette, and H1 Hummer, or a classic old car (boy, those were GREAT), then no more Detroit iron (erm... plastic and fiberglass) for me.
But here's the REAL killer in car ownership. Your American car needs more repairs quicker and CHEAPER, your foreign car take longer to need the repair but the repairs cost MUCH more as do the parts. My wife's, then daughter #1's,then #2's 91 Ponitac Sunbird $450 to put a head gasket on it about $900 to put a head gasket on a 89 Honda civic daughter #2 talked us into getting for her. Should put the $500 into getting the Sunbirds trans fixed instead, or find some boy(mechanic) at church that has a crush on #2 and talk him into helping me put the new head gasket on the Honda civic. Cars are like refridgerators the more crap they have on them the more crap there is to go wrong. When we gaot our new refridge the wife had to have an ice maker, Good old me "What you can't fill ice trays?" After a couple of cold nights I bought the refidge with the ice maker, 6 months after the warrenty runs out the ice maker bites the big one, now who the "Hale" do you think is filling the ice trays? Her car has all the bells and whistles, elec window, elect seats, cruise "Hale" the thing talks to you and tells you when it has a boo-boo. I'm taking it in all the time to get some whistle fixed. My old pick-up has roll down windows and ONE handle I keep in the glove compartment, if I get hot I open the glove compartment and roll the window down, if I get cold I open the glove compartment and roll the window up problem solved.
