In Australia because of the drought we have very high risk of bushfires for a lot of the year. People throwing their cigarette butts out the window are a major cause of bushfires. There's also a pretty steep fine if you're caught doing it, but of course people are rarely caught.

I often find cigarette butts in the courtyard of my unit. I live on the ground floor and there are a couple of floors above; they will often just chuck their cigarette butts into my yard. I find that even ruder than throwing them out the window - at least that usually doesn't result in them littering in someone's private property.

And situations like that are usually the basis of domestic violence. Do you have any contact with your neighbours from up above? If yes, then there's at least a chance of settling such things in a civilised manner. If no...learn how to fight.

I haven't seen many being thrown out of cars here, and haven't seen many on the lawn, but then again we do have a wall up around the front of the house.
People do just drop them on the street, although I think in some areas if you get caught, you get fined. And in some public areas there are bins with ashtrays on top.
Hmmm, I guess people are lazy...

I drive a regular cab truck, so when I'm done a cigar or cigarette I throw the butt into the box of my truck. This is mostly because I don't have an ashtray in my truck though.

Yes. Sorry, it is. Should it be? No, but it is the norm. But I'm sure you may have guessed that.

I smoke. It's something I'm *really* not proud of, and generally keep to myself. I also do what I can to be extremely considerate about it- I don't walk near people, I am completely psychotic about not letting small children near me when I'm doing it, and I carry around an empty water bottle to use when a garbage can isn't around. When I need to toss a butt on the ground, I pick five off the ground and toss them out when I get the chance.

When was looking to buy a new car around two years ago I discovered that getting an ashtray in a new car frequently requires purchasing a special "smokers package". So your statement that "every car comes with an ashtray" is not correct.

Looking Around Re: Smokers, Former smokers and non-smokers...

When I smoked I never felt comfortable smoking either indoors (except bars, restaurants etc) or in cars. Just the smell still well, smelled awful. So I killed it most of the times. Sure - drink and smoke however puts a dent in how you wanted to behave sometimes--- erhrrrmmm
