I have signed a paper, releasing the liability insurance on my car that is not currently operational.
Do I have to turn the license tag in?
If I remove the tag, the car will be towed away from where I have it parked.
Can I leave the tag on it, so nobody will tow it?
Will the DMV know that I have cancelled Ins., and be expecting me to show up, and if I don't they will press charges?

Please help...

As long as the car is not being operated, Larry, I think that the DMV will pretty much leave it alone. I'm not 100% sure (and I think the statutes vary from state to state), but I know in Texas, they don't give a hoot whether or not you're insured if you're not running the car. After all, if you were selling an operational car, you wouldn't sell it to someone with your insurance on it, would you? You'd cancel the insurance first and make them get insurance on it.

So leave the tag on, and no one should mind.

I'm positive that in California at least there won't be any problem. The DMV and insurance companies are completely seperate. Unless you have an SR22, there is no way that the DMV can even tell if you have insurance. If they could easily, they wouldn't ask you for proof of insurance when they pull you over. All you legally need to park on the road is registration. That's it. You need insurance to drive, but not to park. The only one who might care that you're dropping insurance is a lein holder if you have one on the car.
