No thief yet (though getting close to DC-ing one) and I'm encountering lots of locked chests. Is this a time to break out the "Knock" spell? I don't have it yet but I'm assuming I can get it in Kuldahar. Thanks so much for the recent help...I've had some more time on my hands lately for game playing.

If one of the members is strong enough you can try and 'bash' a chest open by clicking the 'attack' button and selecting the chest.

Some of the chests you can bash, but some of them you can't; I'm thinking of the ones on lvl 5 of Dragon's Eye. If you're there, Knock is your only option.
You can either buy it in Kuldahar or find it in the Vale of Shadows. I can't remember which, but you get access to it fairly early in the game.
