im kinda angry right now that some stupid website that (unknowingly supports porn) placed a dialup porn website program without my consent or knowing. since i was also using dial up, i all of a sudden got disconnected and them have my modem dial an international no to connect to a porn website without me knowing (since i left it for 5 min) thank goodness the phone line was busy or else i would be in deep trouble explaining to my parents why i was connecting international (very expensive) and of all things PORN. . now because of this kind of stupid incident, i was thinking of having a firewall installed now in my computer (nothing goes or exits wihtout my consend ) but the problem is that i also have kazza in my computer so i dont know if that would be affected. i also the trend pc-cllin antivirus, yahoo, aol and (now installing msn) chat program. so i wonder if those programs will also get affected.. help? First step, complain to the website where the dialer was installed.

Second step, do get a firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro is very, very good.

You are right in that it will affect all your outgoing software, but you can set certain apps to "always allow" or "always deny", and unknown apps to either "always deny", or "query" (asks you if you want it to get through).

ZoneAlarm has a database in it's control panel that allows you to customize it's settings, whether or not a certain app can be a server or just a client for example.

I have Zone Alarm, and Kazaa Lite. When I start Kazaa Lite, it just asks me if I want it connected to the internet, and if I want it acting as a server thats it.

I thought ZoneAlarm had a light version that is freeware. You might take another look.

I tried Sygate in the past, but it was a limited license that lasted 30 days (or something like that). Tiny (aka tpfw) was good, but it felt very technical to me. It asked me about everything trying to go out, and I had no idea there were so many programs trying to do that! I ended up giving up on it because I was unsure what I could safely prevent or disable.

Zone Alarm can be downloaded free, I think. Nachtrafe uses it, while I use Black Ice Defender. I really love Black Ice and haven't had any problems with it. I'd say you should definitely get some kind of firewall! You could try Zone Alarm if you want a free one and then see how you like it. If it's not what you want, research some of the ones mentioned here and get one!

I think Sir K is right about reporting the incident to the website, too!

I really liked Black Ice Defender. Heck, the first night I had it installed, I saw notification of seven attempts to probe my system... about every 40 minutes!

Only thing I didn't like is that (at least at that time) BID protected against incoming traffic only. If someone snuck a trojan into your system (like a dialer program), that program had free reign once it kicked off. TPFW, Zone Alarm, and others also protect against outgoing traffic.

One thing I forgot to mention: set your browser to prompt you any time there's a file that wants to be downloaded. That way, you can know if someone's trying to sneak something in. If you let it come in anyway... not much more the poor computer can do, can it?

By gibbies are for hire for a nominal fee (through dial-up) to take care of any problems you may have.

Sorry Hark, could'nt resist, I would tell every authority type you can. This crap wont stop unless we stop it.
