I recently wanted to come back to the game and have a little fun =)

BUT I cannot run the program. I am running win xp but I have taken out dx8 and am running dx7.
THe error I am getting is as follows:

instruction at 00423dba
referenced memory at 020b1000 the memory could not be written

if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate because I loved the game and would like to play again

THank you

Welcome back, agent199.

HAve you reviewed the Tech Tips thread and addressed the things for WinXP there? Specifically...

1. Have you done virtualdub for the .avi files?

2. Have you set Win95 compatibility mode for the executable?

3. Have you gotten the most current versions of your sound and vid card drivers?

4. Have you defragged your hard drive?

5. Have you fixed your virtual memory properly?

6. Have you disabled all non-essential programs while playing?

You might want to try Directx 9. I run with 9.0B (on Win98), and I have no problems. Running DX7 on XP may be problematic...

If you've done all those things and you're still stuck, post back with more information. We'll need...

1. OS (including service packs)
2. Video card make, model, and driver level
3. Sound card... same info
4. Specific details about when and where this blows up.
5. Whatever else may be running on the system.

Given that, we should be able to get you running, or at least get to another set of questions

Radek and I are still fightig over this. *giggles* Bungleau has given you several excellent tips. I would however, focus on tip number 2. I think you should also try an older driver, since I have the feeling those would work better. I have no way of prooving this though since I use ATI's catalyst drivers. If you also have a Radeon card you should definitely update to Catalyst 4.3 and Directx 9.

Like Bungleau I would also suggest you update your version of Directx. Perhaps not to 9, but definitely to 8.1.

DirectX shouldn't in theory even be an issue since it's backwards compatible. It's Microsoft though, so who knows?

If you get it running in XP, agent, please post how you did it I know I couldn't.

DX isn't backward compatible. A particular version of DX is compatible only with itself and with nothing else. You must always search the right version of DX, that's why the DX uninstaller is so good utility.
W&W should run with DX7. It does not run with DX7.1, it runs with DX8. I have no experience with DX9.

But I think that the solution to agent199's problem is that the compatibility hasn't been set to Windows 95...I used to get the same problem but when I changed the compatibility the problem seemed to be resolved... Hope that helps...

Well as Radek said, no Direct X version is compatible with another. However newer versions of Direct X still supports older versions of Direct 3D, which is enough in most cases.

Anyway, I may have a definite, but very complicated fix, solution for running the game. I'll try it out and if it works, I'll try to put together a manual and a FAQ for it. But don't get your hopes up yet. It should work but it'll take some time.

This is often caused by the autorun program.
Take off the autorun if it already off then
restart your PC.
