Stuck at the Unseeing Eye!

I'm in the "Cult of the Eyeless" area and can't seem to go further...I've crossed the broken bridge and gotten the first half of the "rod." I'm at the point on the map where there is a marker that says "To the Lair of the Unseeing Eye" but there are no stairs/doors/ anything there...just an area that looks like a big red pit. I want to go down and get the second half of the rod but I'm stuck. I've killed everyone/eveything in this area and I'm still stuck. Any ideas why I can't go down to the Unseeing Eye lair? Thanks

if you haven't done this yet, tlak to Sassar nad he tell you to talk to an anget in the cult named Tad, who talks to you automicaly. his by the pit. He tells you about the stairs in the right side of the pit. If you all ready talked to him just do the last of the part.

Uh ohh...I killed all those cult guys by the pit...and the only thing Sassar told me was "Thanks for coming" and then he dissapeared!
