I'd say so, I used to love the earlier ones before conspiracy and the government began to dominate all the episodes - definately one of my favourites tho.

For me tho there is still sci-fi show that has topped Space: Above and Beyond < that show was the damage

I can't believe nobody put Farscape on their list. The humor is tremendous in that series ('You blue-arsed bitch'-very funny quote when they all switch bodies a few times). I also agree with those that put Firefly on their list. shouldn't have been canceled and the new BSG is up their too. I also like Andromeda for the action and again for the humor.

Edit : forgot about Babylon 5. A whole story played out over 5 seasons is amazing.

Whippersnappers. I go old school to Doctor Who... cheesy acting, cheap props, but mind-engaging storylines.

ST:TNG is another favorite, and I agree that Patrick Stewart brought a lot of credence to the show that other captains have not.

After that... hmmm.... gotta think about that more.

Doctor who, of course, how could we miss out the longest running sci-fi show...and at least now the props, sets and acting is getting better and better, I for one can't wait for the new season!!

1) Firefly
2) Battlestar Galactica (the current one, not the 80s schlock)
3) Babylon 5

Firefly had everything - engaging characters, detailed and consistent plot, good effects, and an excellent soundtrack. About the only negative things I can say about it are the unrealistic physics of the background universe and the usual dramatic license taken towards such things.

BSG is an amazing show, if it wasn't for Firefly this would definitely be my favourite. Fairly realistic physics are shown in the combat scenes. (no ridiculous death rays or "swooshing" spacecraft. Fighters behave in a more-or-less newtonian manner.) Good characters, skilled actors, excellent plotline and it is amazingly consistent internally while delivering plenty of plot twists. Easily the best drama on TV right now.

Babylon 5 is basically a "pity" entry on my part, I love that show warts and all, but lets face it - early episodes were painful, and the actors (with a couple of notable exceptions) give a stilted performance and dramatic pacing was spotty. On the flip side, the plot has good internal consistency and scientific plausibility is high, within the limits of a space opera type show. It's a devastating disappointment that the sequel Crusade had such a short life, it looked very promising.

edit: the only star trek I would even consider for this honour would be the original, the sequels have all of the flaws of the original and few of it's virtues. The latest incarnations are cliched beyond belief.

Dr who ( I agree with Target) those who have not seen the last two seasons are missing out on a truely great reincarnation of a show.

I'd forgotten all about farscape... that was a great show all the way up to the last episode (which stunk). I'm surprised you don't like Firefly... IMO it had a very similar undercurrent of humor along with a similarly implausable but novel/interesting take on life in space.

In fact when Claudia Black showed up on Stargate it made me want to pick up Farscape on DVD (except I have not seen it anywhere yet)... and no it's not because she's a total babe, well... not ONLY because she's a total babe.

Farscape rules! My favorite series ever! GO FARSCAPE!

What didn't you like about the last episode? And are you referring to the movie, or the last episode of series 4?
