Did you know that EZ-Pass grants a discount on commuter rates for people who drive a Toyota Prius hybrid?

I called EZ-Pass NY a few months ago to update my account. When they asked me what kind of car I had changed to, I told them it was a Mercury Mariner hybrid. They asked me to hold, and I waited a few minutes before they got back to me. Anyway, the lady on the other end of the phone told me that she had me hold because she heard me say hybrid, but the Mariner isn't on the list (neither is the Ford Escape, which is the same exact car).

I asked to speak to a supervisor, and I told him that it's atrocious that they'll discount a japanese car, but EZ Pass NY won't grant a discount for a "green" car that is American-made.

I would guess that they have either not updated their database and somebody is too stupid to get around to it, or the American hybrid is somehow not as efficient in being green as the Toyota and has failed their grading criteria.

But I have no idea what I am really saying because I know nothing about either car...and my guesses are not based on anything concrete.

Well, the Mariner isn't as effecient as the Prius, but the Mariner is a 4WD SUV, while the Prius looks like a speedbump.

Hybrid cars aren't really all that ecologic. If you want to be green, get a bicycle. If you want to pay less money, you abide by whatever evil choises they come up with.

Could this possibly be because the Mariner is an SUV, while the Prius isn't? Why yes, yes it could! SUV != green

Well, I guess you could try living closer to your job. Or try mass transit. And if you can't do either, you'll just have to live with polluting a bit.

Absolutely!! A good motorcycle will make you enjoy the commute so much you'll WANT to take the "long way" to work...

Yeah, until that idiot muti-tasking on his way to work, with a cell phone in one hand and electric razor in the other, plows you into oblivion.....
