I don't really think how "they" will see it or how "we" will see it as victory/loss is even where the discussion is. This double-edged lose/lose sword applies in both cases, no matter how you view it, from the "how will it be seen" perspective it can easily be billed as a damned if you do damned if you don't thing.

Instead of considering how others, either other muslims or non-muslims, will see the granting/denial of the permission to build the mosque, we should instead just look to our principles and answer the question using our values. Do we value personal and religious freedom? It's just that simple.

Yeah, but that's a two way street, apparantly ground zero means a lot to Americans, which of course is quite understandable. Now try and find a buildingsite for an American cultural center in any large city in SA, Syria, Kuwait, or any other muslimcountry in the middle east. One where women dont have to wear veils, people can eat porkchops and drink beer, buy lingerie, unmarried couples can walk around hand in hand, and basically do anything that's considered normal where you and i live. If such a place is allowed in the midst of their holy temples and cultural heritage, i will stand corrected.

Their exclusivity is no excuse to cast off our inclusivity, which is part of our definition of our country.

Had we asked this question you ask, which is essentially "how would their countries treat the USA and its religions?", of the Puritans or the Irish or the Germans or the Jews, then virtually no one would have been allowed to make this home.

Besides, I believe there's a serious line being crossed here -- the confusing of politics with religion. The terrorists who bombed the USA 9 years ago were our political enemies first and foremost, not our religious enemies. We cannot continue to conflate radical terrorism with a religion.

Islam IS politics, most islamic countries live by islamic law which we know as sharia. Comparing islam with christianity or any other religeon is the biggest mistake most people make. Christianity has no influence whatsoever on how nations in the western world are governed, islam however sets the basic rules for governments in the middle east, look at the way they deal with adultery for instance...if a woman cheats on her husband, she will be stoned to death, and that comes directly from their so called holy book. There's similar passages in the bible of course, but those don't effect our legal law system.

Anyway, i'm not digging into this any further, i neither have the time or the patience for this. all i know is that i want to keep all islamic influences as far away from my backyard as possible.
