The reason they didn't walk into this project with blueprints and funding in place and all of that was that the project couldn't even be considered if the old Burlington Coat Factory building was declared historical by the City.

The City decided it would not declare the building historic, and that opened it up for development, and that's when the troubles started.

Keith Olbermann (of all people) actually did a really good segment on this ground zero mosque.

As a New Yorker who knew many people affected by this tragedy, I find it downright disgraceful of our country to try to forbid this construction.

It's a building where Muslims already pray, so it will be no more a mosque then than it is now. It's a high rise building, has no minarets, etc. etc.

B. There's another mosque already that close to "Ground Zero" -- it pre-dates the World Trade Center. Actually it's 4 blocks away, not 2.5 like 42 Park Place is.

C. There's like a bazillion falafel stands and middle eastern eateries and stores in the area already. If you've stood on the street in that area of New York, you'd feel as if you could be in every country in the world at once, including many Muslim ones. If you've ever been to New York, you know what real multiculturalism is. Turbans and burqas are present enough that no one notices. Except tourists and retarded right wing asshats.

D. There's another mosque actually AT ground zero -- it's INSIDE the Pentagon, the world's largest office building, and muslims pray daily at it. Because, like, you know, we're a MULTICULTURAL society. Actually it's a prayer chapel for all faiths, built near where the attacks occurred, and dedicated on 9/11/02.

E. The "evil" Imam Rauf behind the mosque is regularly sent by D.C. on humanitarian and diplomatic missions to the middle east. He eulogized the reporter Pearl at his funeral in a SYNAGOGUE.

F. The money behind the "evil" Kingdom Foundation that funds the Imam comes from a Saudi named Bin Talal who is Rupert Murdoch's partner in News Corp and therefore owns Faux News.

G. Faux News reported on this in Dec. 2009 with very little fervor, and interviewed Imam Rauf. No big deal. Then sometime around May 2010, oh say ELECTION SEASON, it became a big-to-do on Faux.

Now maybe you will at least know the facts. Unlike the blind ass f'n retards who think the Ground Zero Mosque is an issue. People are so f'n stupid, it makes me want to cry.
Micah and I already hashed this out on Oasis. My only concern about the mosque was that the developers seemed oblivious to the reasons New Yorkers would object to the site and that seems to contradict their proposed agenda of promoting peace and understanding among different faiths and cultures with the building.

However, IF Raul did say he would consider moving the site due to the legitimate emotional outrage some NYC residents feel, then that adds more credibility to his stated goal of promoting peace and understanding.

Even though we had a rather intense discussion about for a couple of posts, I told Micah I really don't have a dog in this fight. If Park 51 or Cordoba House (or whatever they end up calling it) gets built 2.5 blocks from Ground Zero, it won't offend me in any way.

While I still think it might be a bit insensitive to some New Yorkers, there is growing support among others. And, as Mayor Bloomberg points out, NO distance would be "acceptable" to some residents.

So, if they want to build the mosque/cultural center, that's their choice and - whether some like it or not - it is also their right in our country.

Oh...and John Stewart is f'n hilarious. I really liked the second video where he said the ONLY "logical" way to prevent funding of the mosque is to STOP WATCHING FOX NEWS!!!! Too f'n funny.

Does he end with "Good night and good luck" often? Cause that was Edward R. Murrow's thing.

The building where the mosque will be (and it is a mosque) is the Burlington Coat Factory do your own search for "Burlington Coat factory NY damaged in 9/11 attack" and you will find this building was damaged in the attack, I think you'll find about 22,000 results that's how many I found. the Building is part of ground ZERO, it is was damaged therefor part of Ground Zero.

NO ONE IS SAYING THEY DON"T HAVE THE RIGHT TO BUILD THE MOSQUE!!!!!!! What we are saying is building the mosque there isn't the right thing to do! There is a difference between those two statements.

Yes, I knew this. The landing gear of one of the planes fell through the roof of the building.

Which is a very good reason why NYC should not refuse someone wanting to rebuild the thing and put it into use again. The area around Ground Zero, it's almost a ghost town by NY standards. It was so damaged when the buildings fell that much of it became too damaged to be inhabitable. While a lot of time and effort is being put into restoring/rebuilding G.Z., as you can imagine, not so much is getting spent on the 2-3 blocks surrounding it.

So, I actually find it to be good news that someone wants to build anything there. And a mosque is as fitting a thing to build as anything. There were a not-insignificant amount of Muslims who died to the attacks on 9/11. These extremists kill their own. It's ridiculous. So, hell yeah, build a mosque, shove it in their face that who we are is not who they are. Demonstrating our religious freedom leads by example. Protesting people who are of a different religion always undermines that.
