The way I see it, prestige classes are a roleplaying tool mostly. I can see an assasin going Shadowdancer, or obviously an Harper becoming Harper Scout, so I don't mind that some classes are weaker than others.

In general I think that prestige classes are usually weaker than the basic classes. Why would you take a caster prestige class if you'Re a mage for example? Roleplaying mostly.

I don't see shadowdancer as being all that overpowered, depending on what classes it's mixed with anyway. Ranger/shadowdancer could get over the top some, maybe, but rogue or assassin, it's not so bad. What it actually does is to improve their combat abilities. While a good dex build rogue will be ok, it wouldn't compare to a pure fighter built the same way. It might tip the scales a bit, but not to the point of grossly overpowered. Against a Dwarven Defender, who can't be caught flat footed, it's virtually worthless anyway.

That doesn't make them immune to sneak attacks; why would HIPS be worthless then?

That, and Defensive Awareness only protects the DD from FLANKING.

Flanking = attacking the character's back or sides while they're occupied with something else.

It doesn't render them immune to being sneaked at all, or protect them from being flatfooted against an attacker they didn't see.

...er, I'm thinking if you can't be flanked then you can't be caught flat footed. Actually from the manual; Defensive Awarerness (Level 1) Retain your dex bonus to AC, even when flat footed. So, in essence, you can't be caught flat footed. As to sneaks...that's probably another one of those post too fast things.

I used to have a Shadowdancer and I took him through Undermountain a lot. He was probably one of my best characters I've worked with. I used to have so much fun with him, being a scout for a team or solo-ing through.
