In Icewind Dale the game crashes at a certain point and comes up with:

An Assertion failed in Infinity.cpp at line number 1763
Programmer says: Demand for WED file failed

I just wondered if anyone could shed light on what this refers to cause i am not very good with the technical jargon.

This error occurs after freeing the slaves under the salamander ice castle and using the southeast exiting on the small map after following them through the door. Is there a patch or anything that I need?

Hello and welcome

This is a known bug for people with UK disks, which I guess includes you and me both. Try this previous thread and see if you can find the correct 'UK only' patch.

Hello Beheaded_Limpet,

As Midget Gems stated, this is a known bug. Check out this site for the necessary UK patch.

Once you've downloaded the patch, install it, then go back to a saved game from before you enter the small area with tunnels branching off (an autosave will do), and continue. I'm fairly sure the patched version isn't used until the buggy area is freshly loaded.

I've got the v1.06 patch do i still need to download this other patch? Is it the 1.41?

Also will it be the same if i leave the area and save and then re enter once i've downloaded the patch will that have the same effect as loading a game that was outside the area?

Does that make sense?

Thanks for the help guys i'm glad someone can help me.

P.S. Is it probably best to re install the game, download the patche/s and then load the game fresh.

You need the additional "UK only" patch, which can be installed onto the game at any time and play can then continue from any saved game.

Happy adventuring

Download the "UK only" patch at the bottom of the list on the site I linked to earlier.

Don't use the 1.41 patch unless you have the expansion Heart of Winter.

I think it is fine if you leave the area and come back - as long as the game has to reload the area, it should be fine.

You shouldn't need to re-install, I think. Just download the patch, install the patch, and continue.

You're welcome.

Have fun with the rest of the game, and consider investing in the expansion Heart of Winter.
