I like the fact that you can play now any character class and it makes a difference if you play a bard, a druid or a fighter. In the old SSI AD&D games (Gold Box Series) the classes played a little bit too similar for me.

I think the character interaction and romances are the best part of the game because it adds so much to the roleplaying aspect of the game and gives yuo something to look foward to except get this and kill that.

What i like most about BG2 is ofcourse the plenty of items, but i also luve the portait feature and the ability to make yoou'r own chars biography, i recently started a roleplaying session, posing as hercules and iolaus, supported by altolycus the king of thiefs, to make hercules more halfgodlike i used shadowkeeper to give him 25 str, herc and iolaus are both monk wich seemed like the most apropiat class, altolycus is ofcourse a thief and because he is the king of thiefes i gave him 250 in pickpocketing and opening locks using shadowkeeper, and ontop of that i made a few portraits using pictures from the TV serie HERCULES. It all comes together very nice and im having a lot of fun playing it, realy, you should try it =)

Edit: I think ill make a seperate post out of this to ^^

NPC interaction, variety of quests, lack of aimless wandering and the fact you have to engage your brain to play.
