Interesting... I did some googling to see if there was a way to tell if a fan was going to die, and while I didn't find anything (yet!), I did find one thing that could be useful...

If you're computer-mechanically inclined, open up the computer and do two things:
  1. Using a can of compressed air, blow all the dust off the inside of the computer, paying extra attention to the fans. Do this while the machine is off (natch!) and preferably unplugged. And be ready to vacuum up afterwards...
  2. As you get ready to put it back together, make sure there are no wires, cables, or such touching the CPU fan (or any other fan, for that matter). Clearance is next to godliness (since you'll already have the cleanliness handled ).

I did find indications that the fan could get more use during heavy processing (just like you said!), so the heavier load makes sense. Still...

For a game as old a W&W it is pretty intensive. Not sure how many people could have run it when it first came out. Could be one of the reasons it didn't sell fantastically well.

I imagine people didn't have any problem running the game(bugs not counted) during the time it was release since computers at that time suits the game.

Once people start having new computers and winxp, problems start to happen.

I could never get the thing to run on my old PC with Windows 95, it is the only the new one with Windows XP that will run the game.

I ran the game on a Win98 machine and never had problems. I believe it was written for Win98 but was still supposed to handle Win95.
