How does my party avoid deadly traps in Nashkel Mines, or anywhere else for that matter???

I didn't think there was anyway to avoid all the traps in Nashkel, they lie right across the path you need to take to get any further. However this is what your thiefs' 'spot traps' skill is for. Have he/she walking at the front of your party, edging along slowly (tedious but necessary) and traps should light up in red once detected by your thief. After that get them to then 'disarm trap'. Hey presto, all is safe! (Word of advice, do a save game between finding the trap and disarming it - it doesn't always work!).

I think the thief skill "detect traps" might work
There is also the cleric spell "detect traps", just in case your thief doesn't have high ability score in "detect traps"

Have your thief "detect traps" all the time, and make sure that you set it again after any encounters. You'll see it in your thief's abilities (bottom of the screen) and can start it by clicing on it to highlight it in red. If it's greyed out then your thief might be wearing >leather armour, which nullifies his/her abilities. There will be an armour for the thief later in the game. The distance you'll detect at varies and you'll get better with practice. Slow walking is good to start. After you detect the trap you can disarm it, with your lockpick skill.
