Even accidental racism must be openly discredited.
The fact that a "former" segregationist still sat on the senate all those years brings questions to my mind, not to mention the fact he is a 100 years old. I don't deny many people live to be old and have a keen mind, but please, 100 years old? Retirement is way over-due for anyone who once ran supporting segregation, much less continued to serve til they are 100 years old. [ 12-15-2002, 03:36 PM: Message edited by: Chewbacca ]

Actually Strom rejected racism later. Much like George McGovern, who now serves in a predominately black district. People can change, and I think those who can change life long ideas have taken a bigger step against racism than people like me who have always opposed it. He was definately too old to have run and been elected this past term though. Did you see him speak at some of the post-September 11th committee meetings last year? That was sad! You couldn't understand a thing he was saying. I was embarrassed for him and those who voted for him. [ 12-15-2002, 04:03 PM: Message edited by: Ronn_Bman ]

I think he should stay for the following reasons.
1)Senator Lott's comments were made at an old man's birthday party, an old man that had given well over half of his life to public service, wether or not you agree with the old man's politics SHOULD be of no consquence. The high light of any political person's career in the U.S.A would be when or if they EVER ran for President. Not to take the above fact into consideration in trying to determan (sp?) what Sen. Lott meant with his comment is IMHO being just as bias if not more bias, because you would now being a hypocritcal mind reader, then what Sen. Lott is being accused of. 2) The agruement that Sen. Lott had made that kind of comment before in 1980. That agruement is the most laughable thing I have ever heard in my life. 22 years later after Sen. Lott made the comment it is now being used as proof of his guilt. When Sen. Lott, then a Member of the house of Reps. made the comment it WAS ACCEPTED for what it was! A comment about wanting Smaller goverment, there never was or was even implied to be racial motivation behind the comment. Now 22 years later all of a sudden it was a racial comment. give me a Break! The logic behind "The Sen. Lott has made this kind of comment before and therefore is a racist" testifies against it's self. If anyone is going to use Sen. Lott's past comments as justifaction for saying he is a racist then the logic MUST work BOTH ways. His comments 22 years ago prove Sen. Lott is not a racist because they were not made about racial relations but rather about Sen. Strom Thurman's support of Reagan's stance on a smaller Goverment. That logic is either thrown completely out or it Can only be used prove that Sen. Lott is not a racist. This logic is also Bias and I dare to say even Racist! Which I'll explain in #3 3) This is for the Conservatives that are running for cover. Sen. Lott is a Southern Christain White Male, part of the most vilified group in modern America. If anyone has any doubts about this You just try to make a commnet about any other group of people in the U.S.A. today, and see what kind of reaction you get. Then make the same kind of comment about a Southern Christain White Male and see what kind of reaction you get. You tell me which one gets the boos and which one gets the praises! Having said that about Sen. Lott most of his life He has been taking this kind of crap and He can handle it, I don't think very many other Republican Senators have the Male sexual organs to be able to handle the amount of crap that has been heaped on Sen. Lott 4) The People of Mississippi elected Sen. Lott not the people of ANY of the other 50 states including mine So, tuff S***. The Senate is made up of 2 reps. of each of the 50 States for their State, not Reps for all 50 States, that's called the President! If anyone doen't like what Sen. Lott said move to Mississippi and vote against him. If you aren't willing to do that then why in the world should Sen. Lott give your voice any more weight then toilet paper thats meant to be flushed.

Trent Lott has disgraced himself and is an embarassment to his constituants, his party, and the senate. For him to lead the senate now.....would be a joke. Also this isnt the first time he made that sort of statement, I've read he said close to the same thing in 1981 (?) . Send him to the back of the bus, see how he likes it.

Yep, he made a nearly identical statement in 1980.

This is an unverified source that I came across on a blog that I read:

Just saw a story on ABC news tonight about the Mississippi natives and Lott's remarks and apologies. And there was a life long Lott supporter who said that he did not think that the word "Racism" was a bad word.

The Democrats haven't jumped on the attack wagon on this issue yet, but you can bet they're salivating(and rightly so) for that just right opportunity.

If the Dems had an ounce of sense (and that has never been proven ) they will just let this one go and let it all play out on its own.
