My poor Caroline (two years old) got her finger smashed in a door today and we had to run her to the emergency room (we were in Charlotte, and had to ask for help getting there) and after two hours, it was determined that she only needed stitches...that no bone was broken. However, they said her finger nail would come off and not grow back for like six months. She was brave, and did not even cry when they were working on her, (sure she had been given anestesia but still...being held down while having your finger messed with by a stranger is not something kids usually tolerate well...)

Anyway, its been a long day because of that and I'm exausted.

Wow that suck! My father had something like that happen to him once and it took a long while for it to grow back.

But at least it does grow back and after that it doesn't show.

Yeowch! It's rough, for sure... if for no other reason than you wish you could really take the pain away for her! I've had a similar experience taking my daughter in for stitches on her chin... no fun there.

I have lost a nail before, and been told the "six months to grow back" thing. I don't think mine took anywhere near that long, and I don't even remember which nail it was... shows you how hard it is to tell the difference. Plus, she's young, so her body is already making lots of new parts... it won't notice another one

Glad to hear she's okay... and I hope you all are as well. Get some sleep...

That sucks dude, I had a similar thing happen when I was younger, but when the nail came off, after the pain had passed, it became "cool" for me and my friends to look at

I had a similar accident when I was younger. Except the first maybe 4-5mm of my right thumb was split open. It was a 2 hour drive to the nearest doctor.

My nail there doesn't grow too fast now and the end of the thumb is a weird shape where they stiched it back on.

I remember I wanted to shut the car door for the first time (when I was like 3 or 4 years old) and my mum was like "alright I think you're old enough to do it" and I ended up shutting the door on my finger... but I was a tough little kid then, only got a bruise a small cut that could be covered with a bandaid.
But I hope your little girl gets better soon, give her plenty of hugs.

I did the same thing on my car door. I don't know how it ended up in there, but I think the worst bpart was that I pulled it out in panic. I didn't think to first unlock the door, and then take my finger out.

I went to the hospital because of the pain and they melted my finger nail with a paper clip to release the blood and relieve the pressure. I did feel better after that and I did it myself that night. This was about 11-12 years ago (I did loose half the nail) and I can still see faint lines of red under my nail.

Ouch! she sounded pretty brave to me!

seeing as we are all sharing finger stories, and i dont have one of my own:

my neighbour had three fingers smashed in a big heavy door at school, all three fingers were totally shattered, i think there were about 50 odd pieces of bone floating around. He is totally fine now tho, so that is good!

anyway, hope the little mite gets better soon!
