Oh man, I come home from work and the internet is sloooooooow. I call up IW, and up pops the sticky "Columbia Explodes"!

Everybody must be looking stuff up on internet news sites and forums!

I guess they'll have to retire the antiques, they've been flying for too long and they'll just have more accidents from material fatigue...

Bit of a tragedy, but these are the perils of space flight. I feel for the families and loved ones of the crew of the Columbia. There was some talk on the news today regarding the heat tiles on the shuttle coming off. I wonder if it has something to do with the age of Columbia, being over 20years old. That's pretty old stuff to be launching into space at Mach 6!

What a sad day. As an ironic (and sad) twist, I first heard about the tragedy this morning while attending a funeral.

So says Bush, the thing is it will. With the added attention more money might go to space programmes now.

IIRC this shuttle flight was number 113, 100 after the last unlucky problems.

Still no word on the exact cause, lots of speculation on CNN.

Interesting that many aspects of the shuttle are brand new, the engines for example are state of the art. Only the airframes are original...of course the age of the airframe is a critical concern in the aviation industry.

Galadria talked to her parents last night. They heard the explosin, also, while they were at breakfast. A Nacogdoches woman was awakened by the blast, and, when she went outside for her morning walk, she heard debris falling through the tall pine trees around her house.

EDIT: to add. if you want to rread the best thing that I have read about it, Peggy Noonan's Feb. 1 column

It would appear several people have fallen ill after touching the remains of the shuttle.. (idiots)
Body parts of the crew have also been found

Why do they even start about terrorism, when a technical flaw is the most probable cause of the explosion? I mean; that's creating hysteria, when it's not even necessary.
