Being at work, I do not have data in front of me. And for the rest of this post, you can switch vit and HP for piety and SP and the question will remain the same.

I'll begin with an example.
Assume I have two human fighters. At level 1 fighterA has 50 vit, fighterB has 59 vit. As they level up, fighterB adds nothing to vit, fighterA adds 3 vit each level. Finally at level 4, they will both have 59 vit. Can anybody say for certain that they will have matching hit points, or will fighterB have more hitpoints than fighterA?

Unfortunately, my party doesn't have two characters of the same class. But I do have an ankh of youth (+10 vit). I noticed that when I equipped my level 12 elf bishop, she got a measly 4 more hit points. When I equipped my level 12 mook samurai, he got 8 or 9 hit points (again i'm not at home, so I don't have the exact numbers).

I remember reading in one of these posts that every point of vit was 0.125 hit points. I remember another post where a person claimed level, class and vitality were the prime determinants of your hit points, but they offered no formula, just that there were groups of classes that were similar such as lord & valkyrie.

So please, if someone has experimented or dug through code could they please give the formula or insight. Later tonight, I plan on starting a game with fightersA and B (actually, i'll probably use priests, because then I can measure HP and SP at the same time).

While you're doing HP and SP, do Stamina too as both of those stats affect your Stamina rating

Not to add anything here (I can't) but I have been playing with Vit always getting the max (+3) bonus for the first 7 or so levels as all my char. need HP, as much as they can get

But depending on my profession, the other 3 points either go to Str (for figher class) or Piety for Spell Points. On the rare case I also try to take the lowest speed and bump it up to make my whole group move faster but this varies.

I will anxiously await your findings. I didn't look but hopefully you are on the East coast I when I get home from work can benefit immediately from all your hard work

Why do you say you need so many HP for the first few levels? Vit is really only good for tank types to raise, to get them the iron skin skill and keep them in the front lines. But even for them, you should be able to play in a way that disables your enemies to the point where you don't take much damage. For most other classes Vit isn't worth raising first if at all. What are your general combat strategies?

PriestA and PriestB are humans
lvl str pie vit hp stam spell carry
priestA 1 56 72 67 11 137 10 214
priestA 2 56 72 67 17 143 19 214
priestA 3 56 72 67 23 150 35 214
priestA 4 56 72 67 28 214 46 214

priestB 1 50 60 55 10 115 9 186
priestB 2 52 62 57 16 125 14 193
priestB 3 54 62 59 21 134 32 200
priestB 4 56 64 61 27 145 44 207
Each of them had the same spells and very nearly the same number of points in divinity, water and divine.
My opinion is that vitality is almost useless. The only benefit besides iron skin, is the semi-immunity to disease.

Here are some stats on my other characters, but they only contain hitpoint information.

You can see that 10 vitality for a 12th level bishop added 4 hit points. That alone stinks, but for a 12th lvl valk, it only added 8. That's three levels of stat points burned for a measly 8 hitpoints. My opinion from all of this, is that from now on, unless I plan to get to 40th level, I will ignore vitality.
Unless I play a dwarf monk with iron skin. Talk about a tank.

p.s. if anyone reading this wants to email me save games, or stats, I'll put the info in excel and see if I can find out the actual number of HP/SP/Stam per LVL/class/Vit/Pie/spell/school kind of information. Getting the spell points correct will be a nightmare so don't hold your breath.

Hi Snive,

Interesting analysis. The HP from a spell caster will raise slowly because Vit is not one of his primary attrbiute. A fighter one the other hand will gain much more out of the VIT skill.

As for not puting points in VIT its wrong to make a generalization. For a fighter it's usefull because he is on the front line but for a spell caster it's only a secondary attibute.

I have Bard and I always develop vitality from the begining. He will gain HP and stamina, that is a very important factor for him. For a spell caster I will only touch the vitality once Piety and Int are maxed out. It is important to boost you vit to 56 at least, then you will get much more out of the attribute then at leevl 50.

Other point is when you will fight high level monsters it's always nice to resists to more then one attack. Monsters can easily deal 100 points damange.
