Was Gorion a character lifted from the FR novels? Or was he created strictly for the game?

As I understand it, he did feature in a FR novel, Baldur's Gate by Philip Athans, but that was released about 6 months after the game itself. So no, he probably wasn't lifted.

Wikipedia lists many BG characters as being canon, including folks like Ulraunt and Kelldath Ormlyr. Gorion is not on that list.

As for the Baldur's Gate novels . . . it's fairly common knowledge among BG fans that no books about the BG sage have ever been written, and that a character named "Abdel Abdarian" never existed. Nope. Never.
