The topic of climbing the town walls has somehow puzzled me. I
am having trouble even leaving the ground(except for jumping.)
How do you do it?

You need the "run-jump" method. Therefore:

1. Go as close to the tow gate as possible.
2. Look up.
3. Press "forward" and "run" keystrokes simultaneously and keep them.
4. Press "jump" keystroke repeatedly. Yes, you are now keeping pressed 2 keystrokes and pressing the third one

I have found that it sometimes depends where on the wall I try to climb. Sometimes the stone wall works better, and sometimes the wooden door works better.

If I go the door path, I sometimes get stuck at the top. There's a little ridge at the top of the door, and sometimes, it prevents me from getting up top.

wow. I've never been able to get atop any of the walls/gates except the one at the dock-side exit of brimloch roon (which, one gathers, is where the really significant tree-surfin' begins!)

This is all new to me! What is the benifit of climbing the town wall? Is there good stuff to find/fight/see/get by doing this? Or is it like getting a horse up the stairs?!?

I will try it anyway, but I am still curious.

Climbing city gates is the prerequisite of tree surfing which is very useful in the Brimloch Roon area, where the sequence of two quests is wrong.

The primary source of knowledge on tree surfing is Xignal's site. Click on "cool activities and strange places". I wanted to make an exact link for you, but I was unable to access the site at the time. It should still be working, though.

Also Sazerac has made an excellent post on Page two of the best tips page about how to complete the "seed from the living tree" quest. It also details the matter.

The technique is also used when you are completing the monk role quest. You will need to spend 2 days outside the town without any item equipped. The simplest way is sending the future monk out of the town, letting him to climb the town gates (he is now both outside the town and safe from all attacks), switching off your monitor and going to bed Next morning (real morning, not game morning), the candidate can jump down from the gate and go for his new role.

Thanks. I got over fine, but I now see how pointless it was to even ask. Well at least it stops the curiosity.
