Actualy I find longsword to be the most versitile weapon choice.

I swapped longswords all through SoA and ToB. Don't underestimate the power of the special abilities of the many many longswords. And from a pure power perspective there are some good all around longswords. Blackrazor is just nuts(and since you plan to go on to ToB its ok that you get it late). Daystar is great to swap in for undead (between helm of brilliance and daystar I can do 2 sunrays at the start of a fight and massacre most undead without wasting spell slots on sunray for my clerics). And then there is the amazing agurvadal +5 in ToB since you commented that there was no good ones in ToB.

Personally speaking, I kept adding slots to the halbred and the two handed weapon skills, untill they were both full. It works well if you can find a decient halbred. Granted I did fill up his long sword slots too. I forget the name but there was this halbred in TOB, it was pretty cool.

dont forget the foebane+5 longsword, that thing is the BEST. dual-wield, and use the blackrazor, and you are GOD.
