As all of us know some spells belong to more than one magical school. If - for example - my bishop had maxed out divinity/divine, will casting heal raise the next highest school - alchemy or psionics - or will it stop raising anything at all?

ummm... i dunno. i suppose it might work but really, you should use spells that belong to that class only. but an interesting thought.

good question, traute. i've never raised a bishop's spellbook to 100 (at least, not that i've noticed, i'll take a look from home later), so i'm not sure what would happen.

since the rule about raising the highest college is so consistent, i dont think it would change when you hit 100, but then again they developers did a great job with detail, so i wouldnt be surprised if there was a tweak when that happens.

but all is not lost - surely your realm (fire, water, etc.) would keep developing when you cast.

for a list of spells that are spellbook specific, take a look at this post

Alchemy/earth or Wizardry/earth can be raised to 90 or so in an hour or two by casting knock-knock at the vault door below the Arnika jail, just as Psionics/mental can be maxed out by casting charm at a merchant or any other NPC. The realms even max out much earlier than the spellbook.

I shall see what happens as both my bishops are very close to maxing out Alchemy at clvl 7.

Once you max any School of multi-school spells, you cannot accrue any skill points in the other Schools by casting that spell.

Thank you, Scatter, now I know for sure what I only suspected. It's early days, though, and my lvl 6 bishop duo with Alchemy at 93/89 and Psionics in the high seventies will have lots of chances to work on Wizardry/Divinity which are only at 30+ each.
