How about four? I haven't yet gotten to ToB, but I constantly find my self using only 3-4 people out of my party of six. Also, I am kind of annoyed that the construction of Crom Faeyr will cripple my party due to lack of strength items. So, how about this for a compact party:
PC C/R, dual wielding the Crom Faeyr and Flail of Ages. .5 warrior, .5 cleric Keldorn, Carsomyr. 1 warrior. Aerie, robe of Vecna + amulet of power. .5 mage, .5 cleric Yoshimo->Imoen. .2 thief (enough), .8 mage. So I wind up with 1.5 warriors, 1 cleric, 1.3 mages, and .2 thiefs. Seems like it would work to me, and there would be no item distribution worries. Thoughts? |

Yes, constructing Crom Faeyr can be a bit tough on a party's strength. But there's always "Power Word: Cheat" to get those items back!

BTW, to each their own, but I always find myself using my entire party. Of course, I'm big on party combat tactics (whether it's BG or IWD). Set up a good party formation and hold the line against the incoming enemy.
No glory hounds allowed in my parties. Sargeant Magness says "there's no 'I' in 'party'!!!" Stay in position and do your job and we'll all come out of this alive! Heck, I've tried playing smaller parties before and they always feel too small. I can't create a formation that feels "right". I always feel like I want 3 tanks up front to hold the line, 2 spellcasters in the middle, and a 4th tank being the rear guard and front-line reserve. When I don't have enough warm bodies to fill out these roles, I feel like the party isn't quite right. Ah, well. To each their own. |

I do that a lot in IWD 1 and 2, but I never find my self facing a lot of enemies in BG2. Still, you have a point. Maybe I'll keep it like this and pick up a certain NPC in ToB.

Sounds like a very good, well rounded party.
The only problem you might run into involves said distribution of items. There are so many good weapons that you won't be able to use them all, but that's a problem we must all live with!

I usually use every NPC in my parties too.

NPC's on my parties are on a strict guidline... if they fail to meet the requirements every chapter, they're outta there! I usually end up having about 1 mage and 5 fighters by the end.

On the subject of NPC's, i, unlike Goulum, usually end up with 0 npcs. I usually start with 0 NPCs. And through the middle, i usually have 0 NPCs. They just get in the way IMO.

You always solo? Ugh.. I have to have a party backing me or else I crumble in mere moments, during large battles.
