I just had to share this before I go off to bed.
As some of you know, I was asking questions about credentials and cheese in order to complete a literature critique for a class (due in the morning lol).
I was supplied with the information I was so previously ignorant of, gave my thanks and signed off line to type up the piece.
Opening Microsoft Word, I spent ten or more minutes carefully wording a well thought out 5 lines to construct the first paragraph; a summary of the full article.
Finishing that I decided it would be in my best interest to save my work right then and there without going any further.
I clicked on "File" and "Save As" and the window to save it by whatever name in whatever folder popped up and my computer just froze.
Nothing
Nada
I wasn't going to get to save it.
Calling my PC by its "lock-up nickname" (you f*kr) I shut it off and walked away for a minute.
I returned to my seat and turned it on, waited through the scanning of drives for errors while mentally beating myself for not having written out what I had so carefully thought out and typed prior to the lock-up.
Start-up completed, I opened Microsoft Word and there was my work, untouched, in completion, and STILL UNSAVED but for the angel in my computer.
Good Night and God Bless

Hehehe, This has happend to me many, MANY times. I once somehow wrote an entire essay without saving and the computer froze. When i re-opend Microsoft Word it had the essay there entitled "Document 1 (recalled)" or someting like that. At least Microsoft can do something good.

I type a lot on MS Word, and one of its function is that it periodically saves your work.

You can set the recovery time aswell.
Basically what happens is it`s saved as a temp, and resaved every so often... if it closes unexpectedly, next time it opens it recalls that temp file.
The recovery time is how long it waits before resaving to that temp; to change it go to Tools-Options-Save; and it`s about halfway down the dialogue box (AutoRecovery every x minutes)

This has happened to me a few times too. Because I write lots of essays for uni, I have got into the habit of saving my work every few words. I do this quickly and easily by using the hotkey CTRL + S (in Microsoft Word). It's instict now. I do it without noticing.

And here I thought I was special!

I had never had Word save anything in a crash. Of course I can only remember that happening twice last year but then it was no big deal since I had written an outline prior to doing any typing. Those were lock-up losses that would have had me in tears otherwise lol....we're talking 8 to 10 pages worth of stuff just gone.
Well I am glad this feature exists and that at least sometimes it works! I think I'll go back to outlines and notes before I end up having to test it again though.
