the scimitar is an allowed druid weapon in AD&D and AD&D 2nd Ed because of it's similarity to the sickle, and pre-3E it did 1d8 dam

quote: So they are related even though they are totally different? I mean, the edge is on the wrong side if compared to a sickle. It is hilted instead of fixed to a haft... Is the similarity between the two really the reason for its allowance? |

Leave it up to Wolfie to save the day
And the sickle story cannot be true because Druids can use Sciminars but not Sickles AND what is up with the daggers?

quote: Read what Wolfgir said He's almost an expert when it comes to DnD And it sounds very logical In 3E players handbook the sickles is also noted as a Weapon and the druid is not allowed to use that because of his ethos so as i said the sickle story is VERY unlikely K. quote: The sickle is a harvest "weapon", also used in some old rituals from the old days of European Druids. At least to some old writings and popular beliefs. The Scimitar is a wepaon for fencing, made to be sharp. A scimitar and a sickle has virtually no likeness apart from that both have an edge.. One weapon is sprung from harvesting and farmer culture, the other from a warrior aspect, made for fighting. A think that the Unicorn aspect is one of the best aspects so far for fantasy, and a scimitar needs steel to be solid and also to be wielded as a weapon. A scimitar is a flexible blade, and you canīt get that flexibility and sharp edge of bone or natural material. --

wolfgir, I have no idea how you got that answer
but you must know that scimitar is first introduced to the realm as a "drow" weapon. in fact, drow designed scimitar (by Toril history) as to why Druids start using it, I dont know |

The mythical history aside, I think it is a derivative of a harvesting tool, but not nesseccarily a sickle. And it is merely scimitar-like enough to be considered one from a broad view.
Druids in my realm are typical forager/gathers and farmers. They are mostly vegitarian and generally non-violent except as a "last resort". The "scimitar" is the one of the largest of many agricultural tools made of metal. These druid veiw metal as part of nature and an intrical part of the over-all enviromental balance. They mine, refine and forge the metal themselves, ritually like they harvest plants and animals. Wielding metal in war is sometimes neccessary to maintaian the "balance". on a less practical note: I like the unicorn horn myth! Also a tree-relation could be fleshed out, the curved blade of a scimitar is similiar to a curved stick from a tree, perhaps.

Well, I know that about the drows.
The information of the Unicorn is in the info about Mielekki, the other is from well history. Try and see if you can find an englihman, or someone from Great Britain that knows about Celts and druidic tradition. The celtic druids as far as I know, where not only the gentle and friendly guys! But in D&D as this question is valid for, Mielekki is the best answer I have found. Mielikki (even), Our lady of the forest, the forest queen. Symbol: Golden-horned, blue eyed unicornīs head facing left. Alignment: NG - - (bla bla bla..) Favoured weapon: "The hornblade" (scimitar) ----From Forgotten Realms D&D Campaign settings! (A bit proud, I feel like Memnoche finding obscour information! ) The scimitar isnīt derived from a harvester weapon since the blade is a Spreading, a cleaving weapon more found in butcher shops, but too light to be of use to butchet animals with bones and heavy musculars with. It is like the Katana made for one thing.. Killing people. The blade is light and very sharp, thats why they are made the way they are. Not heavy like butcher tool, and not "gathering" the weat or grass like a sickle or a scythe. GRanger! The moon is the sister of magic, good transformation in forgotten realms. Her weapon is the haevy mace. The new Forgotton Realms describe the deieties and the favoured weapons very well. The moon goddess is Selûne.
