It all started two weeks ago when the paymaster made us change our lodging for the trip. We all wanted the cheaper but friendlier one. So we get there, check in and go to hook up our laptops to get the info flowing. Well this fancy pantsy hotel/suite does not offer high speed, only dial-up. And get this, only 26.4K to boot. Sheez, talking about fraud.

Now, I'm an in your face kinda guy, and that's the way I want my net. Even my T-1 LAN at work has it's choppy moments, but 26.4K, I was fit to be tied. Needless to say, what should have taken seconds to conduct took minutes. Even worse, minutes turned into hours on bigger data processes.

So, I'm back home, chilling on my wireless connection, and wondering what the real difference is. So, a click on one of those our stuff is faster yet cheaper links revealed the truth. My connection is rated at 1.8mb/s burst, and 992K/s sustained, transfer and there are 0 competitors in my area with this connection speed. However, our database shows our dial-up at DSL speeds for $3.95 a month can compare with a rate of 64K/s burst and 6.5k/s sustained.

Hmm, what nerve these folks have for advertising such rubbish!

The only good thing about dial-up is the everchanging IP. Useful only to hackers. And paranoid people.

I'm amazed at the cost of some of those connections. Here in Canada I'm paying 29.95 a month for ADSL through telus.
