Just killed improved Mae'var with a level 9/11/12 f/m/t(levels in that order, of course) solo on insane, and i was suprised how easily he fell with a *little* cheese. first i buffed up(as usual: quaff a potion of storm giant strenght, oil of speed and stone skin just incase my plan failed) followed by the casting of mislead(rayic was kind enough to *donate* his scroll for a good cause ) from a scroll. of course i had to make the mislead image invisible or the assassin would kill it, so i casted invisibility on it. then i went on a backstabbing frenzy. i started by stabing the cleric to pieces with my mighty staffspear +2. one of the assassins had died do to my earlier set traps, as had scracthy. so i back stabbed the nearest assassin, but to my enormous dissapointment, all the assassins used potions of invisibility after or before i hit them, and those whom i hit healed them selves with potions of healing. i was dissapointed, but not suprised. i was prepared for this as well(though i hoped it wouldnt happen), so i led them to the empty jail and trapped them(hoping they were all there) there. then i walked to about the middle of mae'var and the assassins(i know from a former game with tactics that they try to follow/shoot you no matter what) and casted sunfire x2, fireball x2 and managed to kill one(to my suprise, he wasnt in the cage). at this point my mislead ran out and i was visible once more. immidietly i equiped the reflection shield and picked up the dead priests sling +2 and bullets and started slinging mae'var, while the assassins shot away at me with no success in hurting me. after a while of slinging mae'var fell, having hit me once with a melf's minute meteor. at this point i turned to face the remaining assassins. i decided that i would get the most damage out of the cowards if i combined my magic and fighter abilities, so i threw a bullet and shot a magic missle at both. both turned invisible, but apparently were out of healing potions. at this point i casted mirror image and stood close enough to the wall of the jail so that the assassins could take a swing at me. after the first one swung i hit a critical hit which chunkified the already injured assassin. the last one started taxing my mirror images, and soon i had none left. the assassin was only injured, and had turned invisible once more. i couldnt risk getting backstabbed and killed, so after a major brain storm i decided to use a scroll to summon an air elemental. this was obviously a good tactic, since the assassin turned his attention to the elemental and i could go around the corner and sink into the shadows. quickly i ran and opened the door and found that my air elemental had not been injured in the slightest, but the thief was visible. i changed my weapon back to the staffspear(since i had two *'s in two handed weapon style) and hoped for a critical hit. obviously some god was listening since i indeed scored a critical hit on my backstab dealing a nice 140 points of damage and the thief exploded. so i left with only 1 hit taken, and that had healed do to my ring of preservation +2.

i used to think improved mae'var was hard. apparently i was wrong

edit: oops, that turned out way longer than it was supposed to be
