Dang Monks

OK, the monkie kit says that when they reach level 9, monk hand to hand attacks act as +1 weapons. That means I can hit creatures that can only be hit by +1 magic, right?
So here we are: I attack the vampire who's fighting the Shadow Thieves (whom I sided with) with the following result: weapon has no effect.
That before I get level drained.

What gives?

that is because they can only be hit by +2 or higher weapons.

Ahhh, I kinda figured that may have been the reason.
