I've reviewed the older posts on the board about video cards, and I've just picked up a new video card today. Before I unwrap it, I wanted to get one more round of feedback.

My new card is an Asylum GE Force FX 5200 AGP 8X card with 256MB Memory. It labels itself as an "Insane 3d Graphics Card".

The machine it's going on now is running Win98SE, Athlon 900, with 512MB Memory. I anticipate using this card in a new Frankenstein machine in the next several months.

Thoughts?

Not the best card on the market, but it will do everything you need it to.

They have not begun to create games that would tax it's power yet.

Thanks. I wasn't looking for top of the line, but somewhere in the middle, perhaps closer to the top than the bottom. In either case, it's quite a step up from where I am now

Oh, and I agree with you that you got one of the top ones, closer to the top than the bottom. I think I read an article posted on here once that named like two versions of the Radian as being better than the 5200, but I would always stay with NVidia, just because.

The 5200 is the entry level GFX, and in some benchmarks actualy performs worse than my G4 TI4200. But its still a DX9 compatable card with decent enough performance.

Actually, I use the FX 5200 on two computers. Hardly the best card on the market. As it has trouble running older games (Neverwinter Nights, for one) in as much 1048*768.

You can get a Radeon 9600 Pro for some additional dollars Bungleau. It is a lot better than the FX5200.

I second the idea for the 9600Pro. The FX5200 as Andrewas said is the first step into the FX line of cards. Then you have the FX5600, 5800, 5900 and 5950. I've used both 5800 and 5950 and they perform very well but I still like the performance of the Radeon 9800 Pro just a tad better then the 5800 and the 9800XT better than the 5950.

Anyway to give you the best possible advice without any criticism, your card is pretty good but you still can't expect much from it. I mean if you like playing games in high res and with all the extra cool bits enabled it won't perform all that well. I had a FX5600 256MB and it only lasted me a week before I took it back but that is mainly because I demand a lot maybe. I play at 1600x1200 if possible so I try to go a bit higher.

Anyway your card is great but keep in mind that with Doom 3 and Half Life 2 coming out, although you can play them, you may just need a bit more power to bump up the AA and AF along with bumping up the in game graphic settings.
