Greetings all,

I have a couple of questions about armour class. I have noticed that as well as the base armour class provided by a particular armour, there is also a modifier that adjusts the AC as follows for the different weapon types:

Leather, 0 slashing, +2 piercing, 0 bludgeoning (AC8)

Studded Leather, -2 slashing, -1 piercing, 0 bludgeoning (AC7)

Chain mail, -2 slashing, 0 piercing, +2 bludgeoning (AC5)

Splint mail, 0 slashing, -1 piercing, -2 bludgeoning (AC4)

Plate Mail, -3 slashing, 0 piercing, 0 bludgeoning (AC 3)

Full Plate Mail, -4 slashing, -3 piercing, 0 bludgeoning (AC 1)

May I assume that these modifiers apply to both to hit AND damage bonuses?

Does this mean that a suit of chain mail provides better protection against slashing weapons than splint mail (despite splint mail being lower lower AC?)

Also, do these stats mean that a suit of say gorgon plate +4, provides less protection against say piercing weapons than say a suit of unenchanted full plate?

If a fighter, wearing full plate, has an AC of -6, does this mean that an opponent would need to roll -10 when wielding a long/bastard/2-handed sword in order to hit this opponent.

Speak your mind........................(as Jaheria would say)

Basically, a desirable character would have a low THAC0 and AC, along with a high HP.

Heres how AC works.

First a Armor with a number after it is usually good.
IE Plate Mail has an AC of 3
Plate Mail +1 has an AC of 2

Lower AC's are better.

To find out if you get a hit, the math works like this.
Get a random number between 1 and 20 (roll a 20 sided die)
:If this is a 1 or 20, disregard the following and go to note at bottom
Take number and add AC of target.
If this number is greater than or equal to attackers THAC0, then its a Hit.
Otherwise its a Miss.
:NOTE: A 1 represents a "critical miss" in BG, which is supposed to cost you an attack. A 20 represents a "critical hit" and will do double dammage if your not wearing a helmet.

Any weapons with a + value will usually give a bonus to THAC0, which is why I usually go for a magical long sword, even if it does less dammage than a two-handed sword.

I understand completely how AC and THAC0 work, I'm just curious as to how these AC modifiers for the different armour suit types work. Are they culumative with the base AC provided by the suit, for example, a suit of crimson chain is AC0. With the slashing modifier, does this make it AC-2 against slashing weapons. If so then that means that a suit of full plate with no enchantments (AC1) acts as AC-3 against slashing weapons, therefore providing better protection???

Yes to all your questions... Just because Drittz chainmail might share the same AC as fullplate doesn't make it as usefull for someone who can carry the extra weight of the heavier armours.
