Actually Yorick I am for the idea, as it will help to break down international barriers between cultures, and the social and economic benefits have great potential.
IMO it has more going FOR than AGAINST

Then what is ASEAN?

Things change. Try to view things with a long term perspective rather than basing long term judgement on things as they are now.

No one thought Rome would fall, or that the Soviet Union would collapse, or that Americans would outnumber British.

The American hegemony will end. Like Spain, Britain, the Ottomans, the Hittites and the Pharoahs, America will have a decline, China will enter a different era. Boundaries will shift, disappear or change entirely in how they are drawn.

"The only thing certain in life is that nothing is certain." (spoken by Confucious I believe)

And what do you see those economic and social benefits as being?

I think that the US should be trying to strengthen ties with China and Russia rather than countries like NZ, Australia etc, which are not exactly going to lauch a nuclear attack on them.
