You mean mages getting XP for memorizing spells? I always thought that was cheesy. Now, for disarming traps, I think that is right and fair.

No, I mean mages getting XP for CASTING. A successfully-used spell in 2E garners XP, but not in 3E -- IIRC.

Getting XP for LEARNING a spell in 2E made sense because of what it entailed -- usually (unless you had access to another mage's spellbook) setting up a lab to cast the spell, burning a scroll to cast the spell you wanted to learn, and then rolling to see if you could understand the magic and scribe it into your spellbook. Spellbook pages cost 100 gp each and a spell took up the spell's level + 0-3 pages in your book. All in all, getting XP for doing this was EXACTLY what would be fair -- rewarding mages for lab work. True, the BG games don't recreate all of this, but that doesn't change the rules. In BG, you still have to sacrifice a scroll. Okay, lecture over.

Now getting 1 XP per GP -- THAT was cheesy!
