Hi all,

I need a bit of advice. My wife and I are thinking about buying the Redwall video series for my son for his birthday. As far as I know, the only release of the tapes was in the UK. The notes say that the video is in PAL format and that the US uses an NTSC format.

Anybody got a clue what this means?

Yep. It means you won't get a picture. Sorry it's not better news!

There are places that do conversion though.
Here is a site I just found searching with Yahoo:

http://www.vhsconversion.com/

I have no knowledge of this company though, they could be conmen for all I know - just an indication that conversion is possible.

I think part of it is that the US and Europe use a deferent FPS setting (frames per second) one is about 23 the other is about 29 but i can't remember which is which (who uses which format).

I don't know. I've never read the books. The cartoons were really cool though. My son loved them and our local station dropped the series.

Of course it makes a father proud to see his son enjoy swords, magic, castles, etc.

Australia uses PAL format too, which has noticeably better picture quality than NTSC. I believe Europe uses SECAM.

Most TVs and VCRs are multi-system, meaning you will be able to use both PAL and NTSC formats on them. My TV and VCR have this feature. Check to see if yours does the same. If not, some video stores will do this conversion for you (at a price).

Otherwise, ask the retailer if they have the tapes available in NTSC format.

Europe uses PAL but France uses SECAM. I inderstand NTSC stands for Never The Same Colour twice. NTSC is worse for broadcast quality but better for video.
