Even if someone on your machine can read these files, it isn't a problem if you have a "real" o/s (like Linux) that controls access to user directories.

P.S. : DON'T SHOUT, it's rude.
Ermm linux does have exploits of its own, if it can be exploited remotely what stops it from being cracked with physical access to the machine. *nix (linux/unix) might be more secure but nothing is a fortification, everything can be brought with enough practice, patience and luck, my friend
Sorry for using caps, it was required for emphasis

Of course, anything can be cracked - but that begs the question doesn't it?

I don't use anything by micro$haft if I can help it, I don't trust them - and trusting your personal mail with msn or hotmail is like trusting the bank robber with your money. Remember the big security fiasco with hotmail a while back? They actually broadcast your password in the login page! Man what I would have given to get wind of this before microsoft and login to bill gates hotmail account!

Trillian hasn't currently got any security issues that aren't already present in *any* online software, and those risks are considerably reduced if you have good firewall software.

As to Linux, it certainly depends on which flavour and version you're running, and at least Linux you get the sourcecode and can fix it yourself if you discover a problem - just try that with winblows.

However, one gripe with msn is that i have downloaded the new version (5.0.0.5) - and i think it looks really cool - but it turns out that that is MSN messenger, and as i have windows xp, i need WINDOWS messenger for it to work with msn explorer i guess. Of course i have about version 6 for explorer, as i don't wanna pay for the other one. I'm totally confused as to y it won't work together... is it the messenger, the explorer, the xp, the fact that msn has the previous msn defaulted into it on my cpu and i need to reinstall msn explorer, or something else?
This gripe has turned into a request, into a plea, into a beg for help
MSN messenger dosent work with XP, which dosent matter because XP has an equivalent, installed by default. And its free. Well, as free as anything M$ ever is anyway. Its installed by default, should be an icon in your bottom right (and its in your start menu as well). You might need to download an update to actualy message people with it though, but its a tiny download. Itll ask for it when you try.

As for Yahoo Messenger - crap. Nuff said. AIM sucks as well.

Indeed. When me and my sweetie MP, we always have yahoo voicechat going on in the background. Makes things much easier, it does
