Alright, I have Ad-aware, but it's just not picking up this spiteful bit of spyware-msbb.exe. As far as I can tell, it's hijacked my IE browser-any effort to log in to anything means I get redirected to it's homepage to search for...uh...casinos (the hell?) and there's always a thin blue tool bar at the top of my screen which I know I wouldn't have installed unless I was drunk, stoned and dead. I've run scans with Adaware, which won't pick it up, and spy-hunter, which picks it up, but won't delete it until I buy the bloody software. However, a source I found but have now lost confirms that this is definatly spyware, not a trojan or a virus. Adaware and Norton AV are both fully updated.

If anyone is wondering how I'm typing this, I've downloaded Mozilla and while it beats IE and is now my browser of choice, I'd still like to be able to use IE.

Or if you're feeling froggy, you can go into the registry and blast it that way.

****However....playing with the registry can be very DANGEROUS!!!*******

Speaking of spyware, when my older sister and I both came home from college a few weeks ago, she showed me something on my computer to be careful about. If you run Windows XP, do this:

  • Open 'My Computer'
  • Open your C Drive
  • Open 'Program Files'
  • Look through your files. Look for files like XEROX (may appear in all lower case letters as well) or microsoft frontpage (may appear in all capital letters as well). These files cannot be deleted, apparently take up no space, and have no files in them. Hold your mouse over 'microsoft frontpage' and it will say Version 3.0. I did a bit of research (I'll explain) since this was freaking me out, and I read that Microsoft does not use all capital or all lower case letters in folder names. They also don't use version numbers. It is believed that Microsoft put these files on your computer . I have found no way to remove them, and AFAIK, nobody has. If anyone has any idea how to remove files like this, please let me know.
  • I read some more and some computer geniuses couldn't figure it out. Some managed to get rid of the files, only to have it reapper again right away! It's possible that Microsoft is spying on its users, which just freaks me out. Someone else I read up on reformated their computer a couple of times and came up with the results that these files are installed on your computer from the start. This stuff is just plain scary...
