Spoilers! (Not strictly game play related)

I was just wondering... why is Jon capable of taking over spellhold? He's a level 30 mage or something, correct? Aren't some of the cowlies level 18+? (I could've sworn some of them cast level 9 spells against me) I was just wondering how he managed to take over the cowled wizards, given that he's only one man (elf, whatever).

I think the general idea is that Jon's a master planner and a VERY GOOD Level 30 Mage, as in one who has come up with all kinds of creative solutions to the limiting problems of Spellcasting. The Cowled Wizards, on the other hand, don't appear to have one one decent brain among them.

Because the Cowled Wizards are all morons. Let's examine their behavior:

1) When you violate the spellcasting ban for the second time, you'd think they would something when their Cowled Enforcers never came back from their attempt to arrest you. But no, they don't even put a bounty on your head. They just keep sending 4 guys after you, and then get the brilliant idea to let you kill the leaders of their Order.

2) The ones in Spellhold don't even have the faintest grasp of magical combat. Lesson for the Day: When an Archmage escapes from his escape-proof cell and starts annihilating your friends, your #1 choice for a combat spell should NOT be Protection from Normal Weapons.

The Cowled are lead by the Council of Six I believe and they don't decide or make any decisions amongst themselves without being told to. Jon is more creative and has the highest intelligence and dexterity among wizards so it's no suprise of his accomplishment of taking over Spellhold.

So that's what the little bugger was casting. I thought he was casting Protection from Magical Weapons, which made a bit more sense until I thought, wouldn't the Cowlies have taken any weapons he had, magical or otherwise?

Not like Protection from Magical Energy could've helped them out. Being a level 30 mage apparently gives your spells animations from the kensai class, as well as wands. I know it was meant to make Irenicus look like death on legs, but those poor slobs didn't stand a chance. He minced at least four of them into Purina Cowled Wizard Chow in Waukeen's Promenade after he already tossed spells at the Shadow Thieves for who knows how long.

I'm tempted to download the speeded-up cutscene feature from EoU to see how improved it is.

"Did you see the new one they brought in? She's a cutie, isn't she?"
"I'm going to have to practice some enchantment spells on that one..."
"Hehe...hold, who goes there?"

"It's him! He's escaped! Gods, no--he's here!"

(Irenicus dimension doors in.)

"You don't trust me, do you?"

(spell casting...cowled wizard switches gender...other cowlies giggle about his change of shape...subject dimension doors out in embarrassment)

"Well...I see we have a long way to go."

(spell casting...cow falls on another cowled wizard)

"If I were creating the world I wouldn't mess about with butterflies and daffodils. I would have started with lasers, eight o'clock, Day One!"

(spell casting...last cowled wizard gets very itchy as a level 60 finger of death blasts him into chunky salsa)

"Now Imoen, I'm going to have to turn you into a dog for a while."

"What--what are you going to do with me?"

"Nothing worse than I'm going to do to your friend. I'm gonna quote even more movies at her."

(You wake up with a chill down your spine and hope he doesn't torture your poor Imoen with Quest of the Delta Knights!)

That was an over-exageration of his power, when you get him in Redemption he can't do it. It sucks I know, but I guess the player isn't good enough to get a neat trick like that yet

IIRC, Jonny boy only does the double-disintegrate once or twice. its not like he uses it in combat, just in cutscenes.

i wish my pc could learn how to do that.. hehehe

It seems to me that he always has Improved Aclarity on. Every time I see him casting spells, he jsut keeps going and going and there is no way that he waits 1 round in between. That might also help him whoop the cowlies.

I think there's a cheesy reason behind that. Jon-bon's got the Robe of Vecna which increases a mage's casting speed incredibly.
