Im guessing these are tongue in cheek stereotypes but

What is a Pagan?
Something to do with religion I assume which explains why I never heard of it,
Seem to recall it vaguely from history lessons or some crap that was pointless and boring and I paid no attention

Tarox ::friendly glower::, remember the thread a couple weeks back on religion, one on paganism and assorted others? I know you were there.....

A pagan is one who does not belong to any of the mainstream religions (think Christianity, Judaism, or Buddhism) and is typified by a reverence for nature among other aspects. Ex. druidism, stregheria, asatru, wicca, heathenism, many many others.....

*PLEASE* refrain from using possibly inflamatory language here as this is meant to be funny and to make such assertions (religion being equated with "history lessons or some crap that was pointless and boring...") may be viewed as hurtful by some.

I live in the Southern U.S., and even though I do not apply to any of the above, "(My social group in school were not the ones that wore boots to class), I actually know people that do!

For your information,

The earliest (and most correct) use of the word "pagan" was to denote a person who was not a Christian. ("Pagan" comes from the Latin "Paginus" which means "civilian," i.e., NOT a "soldier of Christ.")

The most common (correct) use of the word, today, is as a noun, to denote a person who is not a Christian, Jew or Moslem; or as an adjective that describes something that is devoid of Christian, Jewish, or Moslem significance.

Thus, walking your dog could strictly be construed to be a "pagan" activity, even if done by a Christian, since it is devoid of religious significance. However, the term is often reserved to denote activities that overtly deny the existence of a God, as He is generally accepted by the Christians, Jews and Moslems. (By the way, all three groups believe in the same God; they just have differences of opinion in what He did and why, after, say, about 400 B.C.)

In recent years some have (incorrectly) come to see it as synonymous with witchcraft.

So, you can freely bash the term "pagan" without fear of bashing a religion; because pagan simply means "not Christian, Jewish or Moslem," and implies no specific religion outside of these three.

Oh, Garnet, I almost busted a rib over some of your material.
